Fully-Automated Anthropometrically Correct Sweating Thermo-Regulated Mannequin
DGA CBRN Defense
The F.A.S.T. System was commissioned by DGA CBRN Defence, France for the testing of chemical and biological (CB) protective suits and equipment.
It is a carbon composite mannequin which has a heated surface and sweats. The mannequin is computer controlled and when attached to its drive frame, can be made to perform a number of different actions, including:
- Standing
- Running (At speeds between 2 m/s and 3 m/s)
- Walking (At speeds of 0.5 m/s and 1 m/s)
- Sitting
- Kneeling
- Shooting
- Climbing Stairs
- Moving between extreme positions
The torso of the mannequin can also twist as the arms move back and forth during the running and walking actions. If a particular application requires additional moves, i-bodi can produce these within the limits of the drive frame.
The heated areas of the mannequin can be controlled individually between 25°C and 36°C and comprise of 11 zones:
- Head
- Torso – Front – Upper
- Torso – Front – Lower
- Torso – Sides – Upper
- Torso – Sides – Lower
- Torso – Back
- Left Upper Arm
- Right Upper Arm
- Pelvis
- Left Upper Leg
- Right Upper Leg
The body contains 62 individually controlled sweat points, supplied with distilled water from a network of pumps. Each sweat point can be configured to produce up to 1ml per minute (±10%), giving the mannequin a total sweat rate of up to 3.7 litres an hour.
As the mannequin is designed for chemical testing, the body contains 60 passive sampler dosimeter ports. Dosimeters can also be supplied.
The mannequin, drive frame, and transport trolley (for removing the mannequin from the frame) are constructed from a limited range of materials that are chemically hardened and 10% bleach wash-down resistant.
